①［液体を］

〔流出する， 流血する， こぼす， したたらす〕

*pour

**run

ながす【流す】

1 〔液体を〕 pour; (汚水を) drain; (汗を) drop; pour; (血を) shed; spill 《blood》.

●下水を流す flush a drain

・トイレの水を流す flush a toilet

・涙を流す shed a tear [tears]

・血を流す shed [spill] blood

・汗を流す 〔滴らす〕 drip sweat; 〔せっせと働く〕 work away; 〔努力する〕 make efforts; exert oneself

・彼は額から汗を流していた. Sweat poured off [from] his brow.

2 〔水で運ばせる〕 wash down; wash away; wash out; 〔風などで運ばせる〕 blow away; carry away; 〔汚れを洗い取る〕 wash away.

●川に笹舟を流す wash a toy bamboo-leaf boat down the river

・ボートを沖に流す wash a boat out to sea

・びんに手紙を入れて海に流す wash a message in a bottle out to sea

・シャワーで汗を流す wash away sweat in a shower

●豪雨で家が流された. A deluge of rain washed my house away.

・泳いでいるうちに沖へ流された. As I was swimming, I was washed out [carried out] to sea.

・風で雲が流されていく. The clouds are carried away [blown away] by the wind.

・〔浴場で〕 背中を流しましょう. Now, let's wash off your back. | Now, let me wash off your back.

・〔美容院の洗髪で〕 流します. I'm going to rinse you off.

3 〔音声を〕 play 《music over a loudspeaker》; 〔電流を〕 send [pass] 《electricity [electric current] through a wire》.

●手術室に音楽を流す play music in an operating room [《英》 theatre]

・人体に微弱な電流を流す send a very weak electric current through the (human) body.

●この放送局は午前中クラシックを流している. This station plays classical music in the morning.

4 〔流布させる〕 circulate; spread; 〔流通させる〕 distribute; circulate.

●デマを流す circulate a rumor.

●だれかが悪いうわさを流しているのだ. Someone is spreading terrible [vicious] rumors.

・彼らは闇(_やみ)で麻薬を流している. They are distributing [dealing] drugs [narcotics] on the black market.

5 〔ある方向に向ける〕 divert 《to…》.

●髪を右で分けて左に流す part one's hair on the right and sweep it (over) to the left

・ファックス[メール]を流す send [transmit] a fax [an e-mail].

6 【野球】 hit (the ball) to the opposite field. [⇒ながしうち]

●(左打者が)左方向へうまく流す deftly hit the ball to left (field).

●無理に引っぱらず[ボールに逆らわず]うまく右に流した. That batter deftly hit the ball to right (field) instead of trying to pull it (to left).

7 〔軽く走る[泳ぐ]〕 run [swim] leisurely.

●流す感じで 500 メートルほど泳ぐ swim leisurely for about 500 meters.

●今日のランニングの練習は軽く流した程度だった. Today I just did some light running practice.

8 〔とりやめる〕 cancel; 〔不成立とする〕 reject.

●計画を流す cancel a plan

・法案を流す reject a bill.

9 〔質草を〕 (預けた人が) forfeit; (質屋が) foreclose.

●あの客は初めから流すつもりだったんだ. That customer must have been planning to forfeit (his pledge [pawn]).

・大切な時計だったが流してしまった. That was an important watch, but I forfeited it (to the pawnbroker).

10 〔客を求めて〕 (タクシーが) cruise [crawl] 《the streets》 for a fare; (流しの歌手などが) go from door to door singing.

●そのタクシー運転手は夜は東京駅近辺を流している. The taxi driver cruises around Tokyo Station at night.

・彼はギターを抱えて盛り場を流していた. He used to stroll around the busiest parts of town with his guitar in hand.

11 〔流刑にする〕 exile; banish; (孤島に) maroon.

●伊豆に流す banish 《Yoritomo》 to Izu.

●後鳥羽上皇は隠岐に流された. The dethroned emperor Go-Toba was exiled to Oki Island.

・佐渡には多くの罪人が流された. Many criminals were banished to the island of Sado.
